Volunteer Positions at ICA
All regularly scheduled volunteers work in our main facility on K-Tel Drive in Minnetonka. All K-Tel volunteers must pass a background check and should commit to one three- to four-hour shift per week for at least six months.
Please read the accompanying job descriptions for details, including physical requirements for each area.
Client Support
Client Support volunteers are the welcoming face of our food shelf, assisting our neighbors in need with shopping for food: helping newcomers understand the system, answering questions, bagging and weighing out, and where possible accommodating special requests. For more details, see here.
Deliveries
Volunteer drivers make weekly deliveries to individual homes using their own vehicle; accompany a staff member in the ICA truck to bring a Mobile Food Shelf to designated apartment complexes; or use an ICA van to restock a school market. For more details, see here.
Interpreters
ICA endeavors to have 1-2 interpreters available on every shift, particularly in Spanish or Russian, and fluent speakers of other languages are also helpful. Interpreters assist in the Client Support area or when needed by Phone Schedulers. For more details, see here.
Logistics
Logistics volunteers work in the warehouse area in a wide variety of activities: receiving, weighing and sorting donations of food and other goods, checking best-by dates, stocking the shelves and cooler/freezer, packing for deliveries, composting and recycling, etc. For this area, ICA seeks individuals who are willing to learn and do whatever is needed that day to ensure the smooth operation of the food shelf. For more details, see here.
Rescue
ICA relies on food donations received from local grocery stores and other food outlets; these donations are picked up by volunteers every morning (MTWThF) using an ICA vehicle or their own vehicle. This is a good role for those who want to be physically active and be done by 11:00 a.m. For more details, see here.
Phone Schedulers
Phone Schedulers answer the main ICA phone number and schedule appointments for the K-Tel food shelf, as well as some deliveries. They also answer general questions and forward inquiries to the proper location. For more details, see here.
