Injury is the leading cause of death in children and infants, both in the United States and worldwide. The impact of trauma is far reaching, felt through loss of life or from years of life lost due to disability. It is felt through financial burden, and often results in emotional trauma to children, parents, or the community. 90% of injuries are both predictable and preventable. Through this presentation, we will learn about why children are prone to injury and how we can keep them safe as they grow and develop.
Participants will:
Understand the significance of accidental trauma in the lives of children
Explain the risk factors contributing to injury in the pediatric patient population
Identify common mechanisms of injury for different ages groups in the pediatric population
Verbalize strategies to prevent injury for different age groups in the pediatric population

Emily Fofana BSN, RN is a Certified Emergency Nurse, Trauma Certified Registered Nurse. She graduated from Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN and has15+ years as emergency and trauma nurse, the majority of those years at the Chicago and Los Angeles County Adult and Pediatric Trauma Centers.
Emily is currently Trauma Program Manager for M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.
Emily is mother to three boys; Malik, 11 and twins Caleb 7 and Ari 7, whom she says are "double trouble"!
